Inquiry-starters & PBL: Constructing Digital Narratives
Student inquiry can form a basis for the development of deep understanding of a content area that will result in students having a solid grasp of the “facts” of a subject. Through inquiry facts are learned, not by rote, but by the process of in-depth exploration resulting in greater retention. Students may also develop a passion for a subject that can last a lifetime. This session explores how to present content in a way that serves as a springboard for student inquiry. Learn how to craft “hooks,” scenarios and digital narratives that highlight those events or phenomena that can lead to good questions and research. Emphasizing the use of primary sources, digital resources, and a problem-based learning approach, this session offers the opportunity to enrich curricular units and integrate technology.

Make Computer Science for All a Reality with Tynker.com
In January of 2016, the White House created a campaign for Computer Science for All, to push the need for the 600,000 tech jobs that were going unfilled across America. Building any STEAM program should include computer science, but there are a lot of tools out there. And what grade level do you start with? With Tynker, I’ll show you how you can start coding with kindergarten, move your way up to 8th grade, track those skills and concepts mastery with the Tynker Dashboard. With Tynker, you can control “connected toys” and so much more. The possibilities are endless. Integrating STEAM has never been so important- and so much fun!

Developing and Building Software Simulations for the Classroom (with Free Tools)
This session is an introduction to (a) designing software simulations, (b) incorporating tutorial supports, and (c) building actual programs (apps) for multiple computing platforms (Mac, Windows, iOS, Android).

Software simulations are technology tools that can support “learning by doing” in many content areas including math, science, and social studies. Science simulations for example are freely available from places like https://phet.colorado.edu. While free pre-built simulations are highly useful, there are times when the type of simulation a teacher wants, is just not available.

Designing and building small custom simulations for use on multiple computing platforms, used to be very difficult and expensive. However, the free availability of app development tools like Unity, make the possibility much more accessible. This session will introduce design strategies and technical development steps, to help teachers learn how to create their own working simulations that students can use on their iPads, Chromebooks, Macs, and PCs.

This session will provide practical strategies and digital tools for using images with classes of all grade levels and content areas to help students become more active observers of the world around them. Technology has revolutionized the study of genealogy over the past twenty years through the digitization of records. The digitization of genealogical sources can be utilized in the Social Studies classroom to meet the new ISBE standards in the areas of Inquiry Skills and History Standards. Not only can students use these tools to learn about their own family history, but they can also be used to study history on a larger scale. Learn about how genealogical sources such as census records, vital records, land records, and more can be used in the Social Studies classroom to study historical events as primary sources. We work every day to prepare our students for jobs that do not yet exist, in a world we cannot yet imagine due to ever changing technology. Why would our Professional Development be any different? We spend so much time teaching our staff how to use specific devices and software when we know that they will be upgraded, redesigned and rendered obsolete just around the corner. I will talk about the PD that I created for my district to empower staff to be “Techie”. A term that means a person who is confident, excited and self sufficient with tech and technology related challenges. I will be highlighting the structure of the trainings and tools used. We will discuss the reasoning behind those decisions and how people can create interesting, engaging tech PD of their own, no matter the tools available to them.

Crack the Code! Spheros in the Math Classroom
Introduce your students to coding through everyday Geometry! Presenters will show participants how to incorporate Sphero robots into a math classroom through various lessons in a Geometry class. Presenters will show how a Geometry teacher can incorporate Spheros and basic coding into their curriculum and the process to make the lessons seamless. Participants will get a hands on approach using the Spheros and learning the basic features to make a Sphero follow simple commands through the MacroLab App. Using MacroLab, participants will create a code to make the Sphero roll forward and backward specific lengths. These lengths will then be used as a ratio to make the Sphero drive longer distances. They will also use MacroLab to code the Sphero to follow a path in a square and change colors on each turn. Finally, participants will learn two Geometry lessons with the Sphero in a polygon and area unit.

Riding Innovation to Excellence in Arcola School District’s Classrooms
Come learn about one district’s successful implementation of a one-to-one digital learning platform framed in the best practices of visionary leadership, on-going professional learning, innovative teaching and learning, compelling evidence of success, and flexible learning environments. A day in life of a student will be woven into the story of one-to-one implementation so practitioners can see both successful system-wide strategies to use when transitioning to 21st century classrooms and also experience how the innovations impact teaching and student learning on a daily basis in Arcola. Some topics discussed in detail will be the SAMR model of integrating technology into teaching; how the district created its own job-embedded professional development for staff while offering graduate credit; the use of an assessment driven supplemental instructional approach that is aligned to SAMR; and the presentation of compelling results in academic achievement and student engagement.

Creating a Digitally Responsible School Culture: A Student Centered Approach
Often the new and best thing in technology creates excitement regarding the endless possibilities; however, for those concerned with the safety and security of students, what is new in technology often introduces potential dangers. The question for many is how to create school policy that protects and how to integrate curriculum and instruction that prevents. In 2016, Warren Township High School sought to answer that question by pursuing the goal to create a digitally responsible school culture. A Digital Citizenship Committee was formed, comprised of student leaders, with teachers serving as facilitators. Anchored by ideas of raising awareness about relevant issues and providing ongoing student support, the result is a Digital Citizenship Program created for students, by students.

Learn. Create. Collaborate.
Learn. Create. Collaborate. is an online, self-guided professional development platform I developed for my colleagues. It combines Google Sites, Google Classroom, and Google Plus to help teachers learn about various topics. It also serves as a place to store many PD resources. Learn. Create. Collaborate. participants work through modules at their own pace. Each module requires learning something via Google Sites, creating something and submitting it via Google Classroom, and collaborating via Google Plus. Though it was developed to support our teachers as we rolled out our 1:1 Chromebook initiative, the Learn. Create. Collaborate. platform can be adapted to present many topics in a blended or online learning environment.
