Creating a Digitally Responsible School Culture: A Student Centered Approach

Often the new and best thing in technology creates excitement regarding the endless possibilities; however, for those concerned with the safety and security of students, what is new in technology often introduces potential dangers. The question for many is how to create school policy that protects and how to integrate curriculum and instruction that prevents. In 2016, Warren Township High School sought to answer that question by pursuing the goal to create a digitally responsible school culture. A Digital Citizenship Committee was formed, comprised of student leaders, with teachers serving as facilitators. Anchored by ideas of raising awareness about relevant issues and providing ongoing student support, the result is a Digital Citizenship Program created for students, by students.
